DAYS FLOWED into one another in the palace of the sun. every time Joran mentioned the need to leave, Sola would open another book and read to him. She enticed him with stories of distant lands, the behaviors of strange animals that lived in worlds of ice and fire, tales of bizarre anomalies in the sky she referred to as quasars and binary stars. Subjects she called physics, chemistry, geology filled his mind, opening his eyes to the depth and breadth of a world he never imagined could exist.

Much of what she told him went over his head; much he found hard to believe. How could there be animals that breathed underwater, larger than the palace itself! how could there really be holes in space where all time stopped on something called an event horizon? In his village, you learned your letters, how to manage numbers—and practical experience and apprenticeship taught you everything else. Few in Tebron knew about the wide reaches of the world, and there were no huge books as these with beautiful illustrations depicting the fabulous and terrifying things that covered the earth, air, and seas.

One book particularly interested Joran. Sola had found it for him on her biology shelf—a book with drawings of the sea and the many creatures that lived in it. Joran recognized the sea lions from his dreams, and he read about riptides and currents, undertows and tide pools. Now he knew for certain the place he dreamed was real.

Sola unfurled huge parchment maps of the ocean’s shelf—with indecipherable lines showing the depths and trenches, and the outline of coasts far away. But she had no map that showed the path to travel from the palace of the sun to the sea of his dreams.

“I am afraid there are no maps that lead to or away from here. Arriving at the palace of the sun is an affair of the will and the heart. It cannot be found by studying maps,” Sola stressed.

“Well, then, how am I to make my way to the sea? Where is it from here?”

Sola rolled up the parchments and laid them on the golden table. She reached for one of the jam cookies on the plate in front of her and nibbled thoughtfully. “Joran, I really have no idea. I have never been to the sea. Or anywhere outside my own gardens. This home is all I know. But there must be a way.”

Something Sola called a symphony drifted on the air from an upstairs room. each day she played him different musical pieces, some dramatic, many sad. In Tebron, he had never heard more than three or four minstrels play together at the tavern. This sounded like a hundred strange instruments worked up into an emotional frenzy. Joran found it distracting and irritating.

Sola noticed his mood. “Stravinsky’s Firebird. Maybe too contemporary for your tastes. I’ll put on something less assaulting.” As Sola climbed the staircase to rooms he had never seen, he wondered how she could “put on” music.
